Katrina was a Ipswich based burlesque performer who competed in the inaugural 2019 DIY BurlesKoala competition. She describes her usual burlesque style as neo or modern burlesque. I asked Katrina about her experiences competing in the 2019 DIY BurlesKoala Competition.
Why did you enter DIY BurlesKoala?
K: I love the idea of not spending a butt load on a costume and still having fabulous acts.
Where did the inspiration for your act come from?
K: The bush fires 🔥
What was the biggest challenge you faced in creating your DIY act?
Getting my dress and costume to NSW
What was the biggest achievement or win you had in creating your DIY act?
Performing in a recycled wedding dress and bowing my story of loss through burlesque.
What was your favourite aspect of competing in DIY BurlesKoala?
The other contestants and the fabulous director Mae
If you were to enter again, what would you do differently?
Have the zip replaced in the dress
What advice would you give someone considering entering?
Don’t be afraid to go all out
Have you performed your DIY act again, and if so, where/ when? If not, do you hope too?
No I haven’t it was created only for that contest and was my last burlesque performance.
Have you since upgraded your DIY act? If so, what changes have you made? If not, are there changes and upgrades you plan to make?
No I put the dress on display at formally your Ipswich where they take donations of forms wear and wedding attire for people who can’t afford them. It is a free service.
What is one DIY trick, skill or experience you learned/ had during the creation of your act that you are most proud of?
Sewing fairy lights and a battery pack into a dress
