We’re looking back at past competitors and see how they took on the budget burlesque competition.
Cassandra Caboose, NSW
Cassandra Caboose is a Sydney based burlesque performer who competed in the inaugural 2019 DIY BurlesKoala competition. She describes her usual burlesque style as “geek burlesque.” I asked Cassandra about her experiences competing in the 2019 DIY BurlesKoala Competition.
Why did you enter DIY BurlesKoala?
CC: As a fun creative outlet
Where did the inspiration for your act come from?
CC: Watching Alien versus Predator while drunk on a plane trip back from Melbourne where I had just been to see a show at the Burlesque Wonderground.
What was the biggest challenge you faced in creating your DIY act?
Finding lingerie within the budget!
What was the biggest achievement or win you had in creating your DIY act?
Just completing it at all, it was my first solo act and I also had surgery just before the performance so was still recovering a little.
What was your favourite aspect of competing in DIY BurlesKoala?
The costume for sure.
If you were to enter again, what would you do differently?
More time to work on the overall performance and not just the costume.
What advice would you give someone considering entering?
Don’t second guess yourself, just do it.
Have you performed your DIY act again, and if so, where/ when? If not, do you hope too?
I haven’t yet but would like to. I want to make a whole alien Queen paper mache head.
What is one DIY trick, skill or experience you learned/ had during the creation of your act that you are most proud of?
You can look awesome on a budget!
Make sure to make many, many glue sticks for your glue gun.
