CC Satine, WA
CC Satine is a Perth based burlesque performer who got her start in the burlesque world in Northern Queensland – in fact she relocated from QLD to WA while preparing to compete in the 2022 DIY BurlesKoala competition held in Brisbane. She describes her usual burlesque style as “very concept heavy and completely unhinged.” I asked CC about her experiences competing in the 2022 DIY BurlesKoala Competition.
Why did you enter DIY BurlesKoala?
CC: I wanted to give myself a challenge to be able to create an act without the usual over the top glamour and bring it back to bare basics of concept and creativity.
Where did the inspiration for your act come from?
CC: My original concept was to show both the beauty and destruction of the Australian bushland fires. Fire removing beautiful bushland to pave the way for regrowth and rebirth.
What was the biggest challenge you faced in creating your DIY act?
CC: For me, it was having enough time to individually cut each leaf whilst also moving from North Queensland to Perth Western Australia!
What was the biggest achievement or win you had in creating your DIY act?
CC: Winning the comp was only second to how proud I was that my act came to a whopping $55 head to toe! I was so proud I was able to push myself creatively!
What was your favourite aspect of competing in DIY BurlesKoala?
CC: The complete creative nature of the comp! Having the criteria be less about who is a perfect dancer or who has the most elaborate costume and brings it back to creative minds and how well your concept and DIY-ness was utilized!
If you were to enter again, what would you do differently?
CC: I think I would put more effort into my physical costume instead of my prop. As beautiful as my fans were, they didn’t transport well on the plane over to the show!!
What advice would you give someone considering entering?
CC: JUST DO IT!! Literally the best comp I’ve ever done and I recommend it to everyone I meet!!
Have you performed your DIY act again, and if so, where/ when? If not, do you hope too?
CC: I have completely upgraded my costume since DIY and it was booked by the Perth International Burlesque Festival for their Gala event back in 2023 and has been booked for fringe shows consistently!
Have you since upgraded your DIY act? If so, what changes have you made? If not, are there changes and upgrades you plan to make?
CC: My upgrades included a drape costume which flicks up to reveal my pasties with each wave of my fans! I’ve also replaced my paper fans with felt and make them much bigger!
What is one DIY trick, skill or experience you learned/ had during the creation of your act that you are most proud of?
CC: That I can make my own fans out of hobby wood and hot glue!! Super helpful if I need a quick number that needs a certain colour of feather fan
This is one of the best competitions I’ve ever done!!
