Bunnie Bon Bon, SA
Bunnie Bon Bon is an Adelaide based burlesque performer who competed in the inaugural 2019 DIY BurlesKoala competition. She describes her usual burlesque style as “more sugar than spice, but always nice” I asked Bunnie about her experiences competing in the 2019 DIY BurlesKoala Competition.
Why did you enter DIY BurlesKoala?
BBB: I make all my own costumes and am a thrifter and cheapskate, I thought I could both challenge myself and do pretty well!
Where did the inspiration for your act come from?
BBB: My name being “Bon Bon” I knew I wanted to go with a candy wrapped lolly style routine.
What was the biggest challenge you faced in creating your DIY act?
I made my costume with papier-mâché and a giant balloon, despite having globophobia (fear of balloons) it took me quite a few attempts to take the balloon out of the packet! Fortunately, my partner helped me by blowing it up and navigating my fears enough to get near it and cover it in paper! I am very proud of my attempts, and of the final product too!
Getting it on a plane from Adelaide to Sydney wasn’t a piece of cake either!!!
What was your favourite aspect of competing in DIY BurlesKoala?
I LOVED meeting performers from all around the country. It was such a fabulous experience, and I truly valued every moment!
If you were to enter again, what would you do differently?
Next time I think I would go bigger in costume, and work with more resources freely available to me! I’d like to challenge myself to spend as little as possible next time.
What advice would you give someone considering entering?
Think unique, work around different materials you wouldn’t normally expect, and concept is key!
Have you performed your DIY act again, and if so, where/ when? If not, do you hope too?
My bon bon wrapper went in the recycling bin outside the theatre 😂
